Exercise = Pet Happiness

More exercise = Less behaviour issues = Pet happiness

What is enrichment you ask?

Imagine having lots of energy and not being able to release it, those that have small children will understand exactly what we mean.

Providing your pet with lots of exercise, stimulation with toys and games is the ideal way to provide enrichment for your pet.

Without this enrichment many behavioural problems in our pets occur. It is proven that dogs who receive regular exercise also learn to curb behavioural problems such as barking, digging and escaping from yards.

Taking your pet to new areas such as off leash parks, beaches, walks in bushland or forests can be a great cure for boredom as well as a vital energy outlet for them.

Together these activities allow both you and your pet to get outdoors and start living!
Basic obedience training is another great way to enrich your pet. Getting them to do tricks in which they receive rewards makes pets very happy.

Commonly seen behaviour issues:

• Barking and whining, used to see attention
• Excessive play, biting
• Scratching and digging, causing destruction / frustration
• Garbage raiding, boredom and investigation
• Hyperactivity, excitability and night-time activity
• Uncontrolled impulses, jumping up on people
• Excessive predatory and social play

Benefits of daily exercise and play:

• Easier to keep your pets weight under control
• The stimulation that your pet receives helps to reduce or eliminate the common issues listed above
• Connects your pet with the outside world and reduces anxiety and fear.
• Is great for getting good nights sleep, how wonderful do you feel after a workout.
• Ensure the joints and muscles stay fit, agile and limber
• Gives your pet the opportunity to toilet and reduces constipation and digestion issues.
Just 15 – 30 minutes a day can be enough to keep your pet fit and healthy.

Like most of us at this time of year, we all have things we want to get done in 2015.   We recommend you start setting some goals!

What’s the secret to achieving these goals?

1. Make a routine daily that includes time for yourself with your dog
2. Break down your goals into small manageable ones
3. Believe in the possibilities of future success
4. Start with ease and build confidence in your ability to keep on your journey (and your dogs journey)
5. Keep going however hard it may seem
6. Keep up to date with tips and advice from professionals
