The truth about pets teeth

We tell you the truth about pets teeth, and why some of  the these common statements by pet owners are wrong!

Bad breath is normal!

teethWhile there is occasionally other reasons for bad breath, by far the most common is oral hygiene. If your pet has bad breath it is very highly likely that there is something wrong with their mouth.

My pet is too old?

Healthy pets do not lose teeth due to ageing. Teeth are designed to stay in their mouths for life. Teeth fall out because the roots have rotted away, hence them falling out. When this happens we know the pet has been living with teeth that are loose and painful for a very long time. The reason older pets have bad teeth is from the lack of dental prevention used over the years by the owner. Ageing pets is no excuse not to have denistry work done on them.

They are not in pain!

teeth If something is painful, uncomfortable or hurts us, then it is the same for our pets. If you have ever had a tooth ache, then you will agree it is very painful. Pets in fact have 60% more sensitive nerve endings than we do, so it makes it very painful for them when they have loose teeth. Our pets also suffer in silence for as long as they can, unlike us who whine about pain. Pets only stop eating when they can no longer bear the pain, as this is their survival instinct.

If something was wrong I would see something?

catNo, you wouldn’t, besides the fact pets are so good at masking their pain, dental disease is hidden deep inside gums and around teeth that cannot be visibly seen. How long does your pet allow you to open and look inside their mouth, if we are being honest than maybe 2secs, which is not long enough for you to see what is wrong.   That’s why it’s important to get the experts to do it! FREE dental checks are available Monday to Friday at the clinic.

Pet dentistry is a cosmetic procedure.

teethNO IT IS NOT! Dentistry is a warranted and critical procedure that every pets needs done. A scale and polish of minor tartar on teeth, means keeping healthy teeth healthy, when home care is not working. A scale and polish is a simple and affordable procedure.

When teeth have been left to go bad, your pet will require more advance dentistry work, it is more expensive and it becomes absolutely necessary to be done for the welfare of your pet.

Prevention is always better cure!

Won’t dental surgery be painful for my pet?

Anyone who again has had a toothache knows how painful it is. Whilst surgery can be a painful experience, we offer effective pain relief and anesthetics to combat this. Our patients after having dental surgery recover well and are eating comfortably within hours of dental surgery. Owners will commonly tell us how great their pet feels, including acting happier, more energetic and increase in appetite.
