Brush your cat’s teeth

Brush your cat’s teeth in these 1…2…3… easy steps

brush your cat's teethI bet when you read this heading you straight away responded with “yeah right!”

It is possible to brush your cat’s teeth! In fact, you will be providing the best dental care for your feline friend.

What you will need:

  • Cotton buds (swabs)
  • Baby toothbrush
  • Animal approved toothpaste
  • Rewards (yummy treats: roast chicken, meat chunks etc.)

What to do:

Stage 1
Put a little of toothpaste on your cat’s lips to accustom it to the taste.
To help, ensure the toothpaste is suited for animals and it is flavoured.
Try this once a day for a week.

Stage 2
Lightly touch the gums with a cotton bud (swab) to prepare it for the feel of a toothbrush. As soon as the cotton bud (swab) touches the cat, reward the cat with favourable treats.Do this once a day for a week. Towards the end of the week, start applying the toothpaste onto the cotton bud (swab).

Stage 3
When your cat is ready, try brushing its teeth with a toothbrush and pet toothpaste. Ensure the toothbrush is soft to start with and reward with a favourable treat when the toothbrush touches the gums.

Start by brushing one tooth at a time, spread over a couple of days. You are aiming to create a positive association with teeth brushing by rewarding wanted behaviour (accepting teeth cleaning) in a stress-free exercise.
